Tamayo Perry, a 49-year-old lifeguard, surf instructor, and actor who appeared in films such as Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Blue Crush, tragically lost his life on Sunday after a suspected shark attack on Oahu’s North Shore, Hawaii. According to officials, the incident occurred near Goat Island just before 1 p.m. local time. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi released a heartfelt statement expressing grief over the sudden loss, emphasizing Perry’s dedication, courage, and the deep sense of duty with which he served his community for eight years as part of Honolulu Ocean Safety.
Witnesses reported that Perry suffered multiple bite wounds. Lifeguards brought his body ashore using a Jet Ski, and EMS paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. The shocking news spread quickly across Hawaii’s surfing community and beyond, as Perry was not only a respected waterman but also a beloved figure whose presence symbolized bravery and aloha spirit. Acting Chief Kurt Lager of Honolulu Ocean Safety described him as a lifeguard “loved by all,” while Mayor Blangiardi added that Perry’s heroic efforts and tireless service would never be forgotten.
Perry’s wife, Emilia, also a surfer, offered a moving tribute, saying that although his passing was tragic, he died doing what he loved in the place he loved most—the ocean. Those who knew Perry recall his extraordinary skills at Pipeline, one of the world’s most famous and dangerous surf breaks off Ehukai Beach Park. Surfer magazine frequently noted his mastery of those waves, which had earned him the respect of fellow surfers and aspiring athletes alike. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Perry shared a close friendship with singer Jack Johnson and was deeply rooted in the local community, having been born and raised on Oahu’s east side. Together with his wife, he operated a surf school on the North Shore, inspiring the next generation of surfers with both skill and humility.

Legendary surfer Kelly Slater wrote that Perry had truly lived the life he loved, reflecting the admiration many felt for the way Perry combined passion with service.
