Residents of Roosevelt Avenue in Queens, a two-mile stretch that has become notorious for illicit activities, are voicing their concerns over the increasing presence of brothels and s*x trafficking in the area.
The area, which was once considered a commercial hub for immigrants, has now transformed into what some locals refer to as a “red-light district.” Many legitimate businesses that once served the community are now being pushed by places that run illegal operations.
Despite local law enforcement efforts, residents feel that the problem continues, and as a result, community leaders have bypassed their local representative, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and have appealed directly to FBI Director Kash Patel for federal intervention. According to them, the situation escalated and local authorities can’t manage the issue alone as tougher measures are needed.
The coalition, known as Restore Roosevelt Avenue, has organized protests and identified several locations they believe are operating as brothels. They claim that gangs are coercing women into prostitution and engaging in open drug dealing, making the area a prime candidate for federal investigation.
While local police have made numerous arrests related to prostitution, residents claim that these efforts are only addressing the symptoms, not the real problem.
They emphasize that even when individuals are arrested, they are quickly replaced by others.
In April, federal agents arrested eight individuals believed to be members of the 18th Street gang, which has been linked to violence and criminal activities on Roosevelt Avenue.
Members of the community claim they don’t feel safe and that their children are exposed to solicitation near schools with parents expressing concern over the mental health effects this environment is having on their families.
While Ocasio-Cortez has requested funding for nonprofits addressing trafficking, some constituents believe her response is insufficient. They point to Rep. Grace Meng, who has been advocating for increased federal funds and better cooperation with the NYPD, as a more proactive approach.
Residents of Roosevelt Avenue emphasize that their focus is on targeting traffickers and not the victims of exploitation.
They are advocating for victim-centered support services and comprehensive rehabilitation programs that prioritize the needs of those affected, rather than relying solely on punitive measures. These services are essential for addressing the root causes of the issues at hand—such as poverty, trauma, and lack of access to resources—and for offering meaningful, long-term solutions that uplift individuals rather than marginalize them further.
The ongoing situation on Roosevelt Avenue is more than just a localized concern; it mirrors broader systemic challenges involving crime, immigration, and the complexities of urban management. It highlights the growing tension between maintaining public safety and upholding the dignity and rights of all community members, including vulnerable populations. Frustrated and concerned residents are now urging city officials to take decisive action, implement effective policies, and invest in sustainable community-focused initiatives that will restore a sense of safety, order, and trust in the area. They want their voices heard and their neighborhoods protected—not only through law enforcement, but through thoughtful, inclusive governance.
